Torside to Woodhead via the Longdendale Edges

Torside to Woodhead via the Longdendale Edges - Sunday 19 May and Saturday 22 June

10 miles

This walk takes in the rugged southern rim of Longdendale with magnificent views.  It climbs up through a remnant of the ancient woodland that once covered the valley and emerges onto the open, rock-strewn and heather covered valley side.  From here, a steep climb up a rough path takes us to the edge of the moorland plateau.  There follows a delightful meander along the edges.  The route crosses Stable Clough and for the next section we will cross rough, open country up and down classic ‘groughs’ to locate the small pile of wreckage and memorial cairn marking the site where a Wellington bomber crashed in 1943.

We descend through attractive woodland to the popular picnic area of the Blacks, followed by a much easier return along the Trans Pennine Trail to the car park.

Event Grade: Very Hard – longer more challenging walks with steep ascents and descents, loose ground and rough terrain.  A high level of fitness and stamina is required.  If in any doubt, please try one of our other walks first.
