Lathkill Dale - Water Wheels and Steam Engines! - Saturday 14 June

7 Miles

Great for adventurous families. Children over 8 years please. Remember under 18s come free!

An iconic location in the Peak District, this Site of Special Scientific Interest is rich in ancient woodlands and flanked by limestone cliffs. Expect to see some lovely flowers.  Our coffee and lunch spots are by the river and we should see dippers and wagtails.

But, for centuries this fine limestone valley was the site of lead mining and there was even talk of a Gold Rush!  Amid the woodland we will discover relics of this time. We will also learn of medieval granges, find a lost village and even an Iron Age hill fort.  The oldest map of the area was created here in 1528 to resolve arguments between the villagers, the farmers and the monks!
