Intermediate Navigation - Saturday 27 June

Today we build on the beginners navigation course, comprising a short presentation followed by practice on the moors in the Upper Derwent Valley. 

We assume you have knowledge of  map reading and navigating without a compass, map scales, symbols, grid references, distances, contours and topography. 

The course covers navigating using a map and compass; the use of route cards using 6-figure grid references; the different North points; taking and walking on a bearing, pacing and timing.

Event Grade: Moderate - walk is mostly on paths, but some rough and uneven ground.  One steep climb, and a very steep descent. 

Extra Items: Bring OS  Explorer Map. OL1 Dark Peak (1:25,000 map) and a compass if you have them.

Start: 10:00am  Finish: 3:30pm

Meeting Point: Fairholmes Visitor Centre (near Derwent dam). Toilets at start.    

Parking: Pay & Display - Parking will be busy so arrive early to find a space.
