Navigating without compass and mainly using rights of way. Basic map symbols; national grid system; 6 figure grid refs; scales; map types; distances; contours and shapes of terrain; orientating map using features; relating map to ground. 

Event Grade: Moderate - moderate walks on ground with sometimes rough and uneven terrain and gradients

Event Terrain: Please note that part of this course will be indoors but the majority of the time will be a practical session about 3 miles over rough tracks and open moorland. 

Extra Items: Please bring walking gear, waterproof clothing, boots and food, snacks and drink for the day. Ordnance Survey OL24 White Peak map 1:25,000.   

Start: 10am  Finish: 5pm

Meeting Point: United Utilities Forest Classroom, Macclesfield Forest. Please note we are NOT meeting at Trentabank Car Park. The classroom is located between Ridgegate and Trentabank Reservoirs, at the eastern end of Ridgegate Reservoir. You need to turn into a small lane leading off Standing Stone Road. The sign on the road opposite the lane entrance points to 'Forest Office'.

Parking: Free parking in the morning in Forest Yard for attendees. Moving to Derbyshire Bridge for the practical element. Toilets at the morning classroom and at the start of the afternoon practical.

Cost: £15 per person aged 18 and above. This course is not suitable for children under 16 or wheelchair users. Those 16 or 17 can attend at no charge but still need to book a place.
