A friendly introduction to map reading in small groups with the Peak District National Park Rangers. Learn to navigate with a map, mainly following rights of way. Get to grips with scales, map symbols; grid references and contours; orientating map using features; relating the map to the ground. The morning will take place indoors learning basic navigation principles. The afternoon will take place on nearby valley paths navigating using the map only.

Event Grade: Moderate - moderate walks on ground with sometimes rough and uneven terrain and gradients.

Extra Items: Bring walking gear, waterproof clothing, boots, food and drink for the day. Bring OS Explorer map (1:25,000) OL1 The Peak District - Dark Peak Area; pen or pencil, a Silva Compass (or similar) and a notepad.  

Event Terrain: The afternoon will take place over low-level paths in the Longdendale valley.
